The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office – Office of Civil Defense Region 6 conferred the Gawad KALASAG Award to the three municipalities of the Province of Guimaras who exemplified excellence in disaster risk reduction and management and humanitarian assistance during the 23rd Gawad KALASAG Awarding Ceremony for the Province of Guimaras on January 18, 2024 at Caza Guest House, San Miguel, Jordan, Guimaras.

The Municipalities of Buenavista, Nueva Valencia, and Sibunag got the Gawad KALASAG Seal for garnering “Fully Compliant” rating.

Office of Civil Defense Region 6 Director Raul E. Fernandez assisted by Governor JC Rahman A. Nava, MD and Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Officer IV Ms. Teresita Siason handed the awards to the winners.

Municipality of Buenavista Mayor Samuel T. Gumarin, Mayor Paul Vincent De La Cruz of Nueva Valencia, and Mayor Anabelle V. Samaniego of Sibunag accepted the award for their respective municipalities.

“As we continue to realize our efforts for the progress of the province, we would like to express our gratitude to every municipality’s initiation. In the same way, we can go beyond what compliant that we can achieve for the next year as we go through every disaster,” Governor Nava said in his message.

The three municipalities of the Province of Guimaras are among the 56 local government units in Western Visayas who have passed the regional validation in the 23rd Gawad KALASAG Award.

Gawad KALASAG Search for Excellence in Disaster Risk Reduction and Management and Humanitarian Assistance is the country’s premier annual awards for various stakeholders who promote and implement disaster risk reduction and management, climate change adaptation (DRRM-CCA), and humanitarian assistance programs that protect and shield high-risk communities against extreme hazards and render them more capable of addressing their vulnerabilities.
