The Sibunag Aquafarmers and Fishermen Cooperative (SAFC) and the provincial government of Guimaras (PGG) under the leadership of Governor JC Rahman A. Nava MD launched demonstration and learning sites for milkfish production at San Isidro, Sibunag, Guimaras on June 28, 2024.

The establishment of demo and learning sites are in line with the provincial government’s commitment and support to the Sibunag Aquafarmers and Fishermen Cooperative (SAFC) and Padaraonan Unified Association of Nueva Valencia. Said program is included in the PGG Provincial Development and Physical Framework Plan (PDPFP) 2019-2029 which aims to improve fishery production, aquaculture and production of high value species with high market demand.

“Our Governor is in full support of the programs for fisherfolks and aquafarmers. Gina tinguhaan gid namon kaupod sang Provincial Government of Guimaras nga matagaan kamo sang nagaka-igo nga assistance paagi sa aton Provincial Office for Agricultural Services (POAS).” Executive Assistant III Gerardo Gaitan representing Governor Nava said.

In January of this year, the Agricultural Training Institute-Regional Training Center VI awarded the amount of Php 150,000 to SAFC for learning site construction.

POAS head Alvin Nava identified factors affecting fisherfolks such as less production during unfavorable weathers, market price, and untoward incidents while the fishermen are out at sea.

With the evolution of technology on fish cultures, cages are now made of High Density Polyethylene (HPDE) designed for optimum durability, economy and functionality. These materials can withstand adverse weather conditions such as strong winds and typhoons.

Present during the launching were 10th Sangguniang Panlalawigan Member Luben G. Vilches, Sibunag Vice Mayor Reynaldo Segovia, Agricultural Training Institute (ATI) Center Director Mary Ann Ramos, barangay and municipal officials, SAF and Pandaraonan Unified Association of Nueva Valencia members.
