GUIMARAS’ SENIOR CITIZENS GATHER TO CELEBRATE FILIPINO ELDERLY WEEK

Senior citizens from the five municipalities in the Province of Guimaras gathered at Guimelco Covered Gym on October 29, 2024 for the annual Elderly Filipino Week celebration with a theme: “Senior Citizens – Building the Nation, Inspiring Generations”.

The celebration was a lively day filled with fun, talents, and community spirit honoring the senior citizens in the province.

The event started with a “Walk for Life” and followed by a Zumba dance. An orientation on home care support and services was also conducted. Meanwhile, the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) provided free services for the elderly Guimarasnons.

The coronation of Gandang Lola 2024 was the highlight of the event. Miss Alma P. Pama from the Municipality of Buenavista was crowned Gandang Lola 2024. Municipality of San Lorenzo’s Felomina M. Pelingon is first runner-up while Liberty T. Gabayeron from Nueva Valencia is second runner-up. Sibunag’s Marina T. Gange is third runner-up and Lucia A. Eday of the Municipality of Jordan is fourth runner-up.

The event likewise showcased the timeless talents of the senior citizens in Guimaras. From traditional dance numbers and singing performances to binalaybay, seniors had their opportunity to express themselves and share their talents with the community.

OIC Governor John Edward Gando praised the senior citizens in the province for reaching this far and vowed to go hard against violators of senior citizen’s laws.

“Halin kay Governor Dr. Rahman Nava kag kay Congresswoman Dr. Ma. Lucille Nava, kag sa ika-pulo nga Sangguniang Panlalawigan, ang amon pagpanginbulahan sa amon pinalangga nga mga senior citizens. You are our inspiration in serving the people and the Province of Guimaras,” Gando said.

This annual observance, part of the Filipino Elderly Week, emphasizes respect, gratitude, and support for older adults, reinforcing their significant role in Filipino culture and society. The joyful event not only highlighted the senior’s talents but also fostered community unity, making it a memorable day for the elderly and their loved ones in Guimaras.
